We’ve been talking about the “big one” that will hit California for decades. Really, they’ve been expecting it since about 1906. Although California gets a bad rap for earthquakes, parts of almost all US states and territories are at moderate risk or higher for earthquakes.
Building construction plays a key role in the building and its occupants survival. Foundations should be solid, with damage properly repaired. As obvious as it may sound, the house itself should be properly bolted to the foundation. Reinforce masonry structures like foundations and chimneys.
Large appliances should be secured to the wall. Water heaters should be held with metal straps or plumbers tape. Don’t put glass or heavy objects above beds.
